Year's end
I finished THE MOVIEGOER this morning. It was a good book and I found it hard to know what to make of the main character. He is dispicable and yet I liked him very much. We can identify with his dilema: caught between the everydayness of the world and need for spiritual redemption, the desire to give into wordly temptations and the desire to seek something larger. More than the desires themselves, the need for feeling justified for seeking either. The cost of reading and contemplating great ideas is the weight of reconciling the reality of them.
Today is the last day of 2007. It has been a good year, the end of which brought many changes. I believe I will look back on it as one of the most transitional years of my life. But perhaps not. Such changes take place gradually and so often do not coincide with major events the way we would write them as doing.
