Cloverfield
Went to see CLOVERFIELD this evening, unsure of what to expect, at the Alamo Drafthouse with my brother and his friend. There really isn't a lot to the movie: a modernization of the Monster movies of yesteryear, shot in a Blair Witch-esque faux-verite style, doing everything it can to recall images of 9/11 and be a little more important than it is. But I have to admit, it was a great ride.
It's interesting: can a high concept film make a comment on popular culture by embracing its aesthetics? Does CLOVERFIELD literally attack and squash the "facebook generation," for whom no event is any more important than the photos and videos taken at said event, or does it just reinforce the notion that such methods help to create a record of meaning? Or does it even care? Hell, I'm not sure I do. But the film definitely stands as a new placeholder in that ever accelerating merge of communication / social technology and entertainment.
CLOVERFIELD is a very fun one-timer. See the movie for its surprises (it's even better if you go in not knowing it's a monster movie) and move on with your life. It's even better with a beer.
