SXSW quick update 2
Brett and I are about to head out for another day of filmgoing. Today we're starting with MY EFFORTLESS BRILLIANCE. Yesterday contained a bit of drudgery but was not without its bright moments.
A few thoughts:
When did independent cinema decide to equate itself with low production values? More importantly, when did audiences begin to LIKE this?
Is screenwriting and then expecting your actors to adhere to a script a dying art?
Interestingly, the film with the most controversial subject (Bullfighting) was unquestionably one of the least debatably beautiful films: THE MATADOR captured both the balletic and brutal aspects of the sport without being propoganda for either side.
The "documentary-style narrative" is a new theme among the narratives at SXSW. Of those that I've seen in their final form, only WOODPECKER manages to intelligently incorporate its aesthetic into an attempt to trascend the genre.
