It was both a surprise and an honor for everyone involved in the project.

Enormous thanks goes out to Torrie, Sandrine, and everyone responsible for organizing the festival. I was there with 1,000 freshly printed DVDs in tow, and now am able to renew efforts to get the film into more festivals.

"Blackbird" recently played at USC's FIRST LOOK festival, where it was chosen by a panel of industry jurors as one of six finalists for the FotoKem awards. It will be screening TOMORROW at the Directors Guild of America, where the winners will be announced.

It's playing alongside some very wonderful films, and I am honored to be nominated.

The other finalists include:

DOG-EARED by Josh Tate

I'm flying out to LA tonight for the screening. I hope to see many friendly faces.

SXSW 2012

Another incredible year at SXSW has come and gone, and though I was able to participate in far less of the festivity and film-going than years past, I still managed to have an incredible time and see a number of inspiring films (and as always some incredible music). I can honestly say I didn't see a single film that felt like a disaster, which is an improvement over every other festival-going experience in my life. Every screening I attended had something that resonated and left me happy I had given the film a chance.

A new friend I met in line at the festival and I exchanged emails with our favorites that we had seen... and here's my list. Keep an eye out for these films in future festivals, theaters, and netflix streams. There are many other worthy films that I did not have the chance to see, but I hope to catch them in the future.

Eden - narrative award winner for good reason. About an abducted girl who is thrust into the American sex slavery ring. Able to rise up and eventually escape. Based on a true story. Amazing job of artfully balancing the subject matter and tone without ever dropping too far into exploitation or melodrama. Powerful.

The Taiwan Oyster - made on a nothing budget in Taiwan, it has a great handmade and authentic vibe with some spectacular moments.

Safety Not Guaranteed - funny, heartfelt, and surprising. Time travel and Mark Duplass. Just a great little movie.

Starlet - Full of unexpected twists and smart storytelling, this is a gem of a film that captures the kind of sunlit moral ambivalence of Los Angeles in a fresh way. A young, sexy girl yearning for life in all the wrong places befriends an elderly woman and their friendship becomes the center of a disarmingly bold and heartfelt film. Occasionally off acting and artistic indulgence actually make the film feel more sincere. This one may have stuck with me the most.

Pilgrim Song - not for everyone, but I found it poetically simple, moving, and funny all at once. A recently fired teacher goes on a hike along the Appalachian trail to find himself, leaving his girlfriend behind in the process.

Killer Joe - what can I say... I'll never think of fried chicken the same again. Far from perfect but a wild and memorable ride.

The Hunter - Willem Dafoe in a slow burn and heady movie about a mercenary hired to find the thought-to-be-extinct Tasmanian tiger. Some wonderful moments that don't quite add up, but still a worthwhile and intriguing film.

Crazy Eyes - a very uneven movie but it nails some things about a certain LA lifestyle that I found really spot on and I really enjoyed it for that. I could also relate to the lead character's inadvisable pursuit of a crazy girl (what man can't?)

See Girl Run - not a bad romantic dramedy that surprises us with its ending. Kind of slept watched through it.

Wolf - just not for me, though it played well in front of its intended audience. Bold subject matter that is handled fairly well. A black family discovers their teenage boy has been molested by their preacher. The problem is, the boy thinks he is in love with the preacher and the preacher is trying to mend his ways.
