BACKROADS post production update (November 1, 2007)
Mark and I have been working hard and sporadically on the rough cut, which we hope to finish on Monday. On Tuesday we synched up all the dialog and subclipped it by scene. Today I reviewed all of the dialog footage and made notes on performances, composition, etc. to begin the process of selecting how we'll cut each dialog scene. On Sunday, we'll try and rough together each dialog scene and hopefully assemble all of the scenes into a single cut. Monday we'll begin creating the film's opening scene and credits and feeling out how they work with the rest of first cut.
Next week will be the majority of the fine cutting, as Mark has the entire week to do nothing but work on BACKROADS and I have plenty of time reserved as well.
Post production is an exciting and scary time. It's where the film really begins to take shape. You find out what you have and what you don't have. Usually you discover things you needed and realize how much time you spent getting something you'll never use. But the best part is that it forces you to start to make final, meaningful decisions that will truly shape what the film will be.
